TV CONVERTER BOX TIPS from freelancer, MARY & JEFF

ANJIE NOTE: get your 2 free converter box coupons (per address) converter box and be ready for the switch
another tip from freelancer, JEFF, "everyone should have 1 converter box" in case of emergency - should cable be "out" to watch upcoming weather reports and news!"

Hi Anjie

As a person who has to get a converter box to still have TV in February, I would like to share some information that maybe others in my situation are not aware of.

After hooking up the converter box, we found that we could not program the VCR to record a different program than the one we were currently watching. To make a long story short and after doing some checking, we were told the following:

1. If one wants to record a different show than what is being watched, one needs a second converter box for the VCR.

2. Unless one has a converter box for their VCR, they also cannot program it to record a show at say, 10:00 p.m. because one is going to be gone at that time, unless they are physically at home to program in that channel on the converter box.

I hope this makes some sense.

Also...I am the $100.00 winner for September's Ezanga drawing.!!

I am glad that they have been advertising this converter box for a long time. There are a lot of people who didn't know about this and I have already purchased one just in case!!!! LOL

I was wondering if you can tell me how we can get it to work with out having cable. We just do rabbit ears and have the box but, when we hook it up only 2 of our 6 channels show up. 3 of them should be digital already as they were switching in September. We are dumbfounded by this

This is a good deal. our family all has gotten their $40 cards and bought their boxes already! Thanks for letting us know early and often!

https://www.dtv2009.gov/ Site has some great info on coupons for converter boxes...maybe if you need more than one (for recording via VCR) a friend who doesn't need the box can request it for you?

Thanks for the tips! Although we are ready for the conversion, I was at y parents this past weekend, and she did not have a converter and has a VERY old TV set. I tried to explain the importance, but we know how parents can be :-) For anyone thinking they will not need one, talk to your older friends and relatives who may not understand the technology change, and make sure they are ready as well!

I'd love to receive the Dale & Thomas gc! I used your tips last year at Christmas and was able to get tons of yummy gifts from them for next to nothing!

We've got satellite and a digital ready tv, so we don't need a converter box.

All this time, I did not pay attention to the notes about needing a box because we have cable. My understanding now is everyone should have a box is this true?
Thanks

Thanks for the info! I have my 2 coupons from the govt, but am curious to know where the best place is to buy- the $40.01 deals online, or at local retail outlets? Also, I have been told I might need a separate antenna to pick up a signal- the rabbit ears on my little portable TV won't do it. What's the experience of other frugal shoppers?

I think a lot of the senior citizens need help understanding this....so if you have a neighbor or relative you can help, it would be appreciated.

man, this digital conversion is the worst thing to happen to us. it's such a rip. it's either cable or too many converter boxes

Becky said...

So the converter boxes are working like digital cable and dishes? That's always been one of my least favorite things about digital cable. The only way around it seems to be a DVR i guess.

Hi, Anjie.
It was my understanding that I would not need a converter box since I have cable.
After reading this article, I guess I'll go ahead and get one. BUT, I'll hide it from my husband. That way, it'll depend on me as to whether or not we watch TV or not! To be honest, a day without TV would mean peace and quiet for a day! :)

Good morning all! I haven't purchased a box yet but I will "just in case". My comment is thaqt I don't appreciate not having a choice anymore. Is this "Big Brother" or what? Everyone cannot afford cable and many cannot affor the boxes. I think there should be some alternative.

Thank you! You are super helpful!

there is at least one converter box that has an event timer- the DTVPal, also labeled as the TR-40CRA ( http://www.dtvpal.com/ , http://www.ezdigitaltv.com/DISH_Network_DTVPal.html ). It also has analog pass-through, and is priced at $60 if branded as DTVPal or $40 (so free after the $40 coupon) if branded as the TR-40. There's also a DTVPal Pro that has more features and costs more - I don't think it qualifies for the coupon.

I have no connection to this company.

http://antennaweb.org/ will let you put in your address and see what stations (analog, digital, or both) are in your range, what type of antenna you’ll need, and which direction you’ll need to aim it if you need a directional antenna.
